Lee, This was helpful. I setup W7 in a virtual system like you suggested since I had trouble installing DNN after having used Visual Studio 2010 with ASP.net 4.0. One suggestion is to highlight that SQL Express error in the 4th video. I ran into that and spent a good bit of time getting DNN to install - if I had just watched the 5th video I would have saved a lot of time... thanks, Dan |

Hi Lee,
I'm looking to upgrade to Windows 7 however I cannot use SQL Server 2008 Express with my current hoster. Do you know if Windows 7 runs with SQL Server 2005 Express (on Win 7 Home Premium) and DotNetNuke?
Cheers, Celeste. |

Lee, I signed up today and became a customer. Immediately my investment paid off because of your *thorough* videos. I can't wait to spend the next few months moving from beginner to advanced. I'm so excited. May i ask you what may be a home networking question? I installed DNN on a desktop running W7 Ultimate and SQLServer 2008. I have several computers running on my home windows network, a Netgear Wireless router, all of them W7 Ultimate, and wish to run the DNN site i created on the computer i installed it on. While i can 'ping' that computer from all of my other computers, when i type the URL of the computer and the DNN site name ( http://britbotpc-pc/dnn_522_tutoria...ult.aspx), the browser on the other computers i'm working on jumps to localhost on that computer and doesn't even recognize my dotnetnuke site on the other computer. Perhaps i'm missing something that would allow other computers on my home network, an intranet, to connect to the DNN site i set up?? Can you point me in a direction? Like i said, i can ping it OK,,, Thanks again, Robert |

The fact that your site is redirecting to "localhost" is your indicator that the "portalalias" for the site is incorrect. You will want to add a portal alias like this to your site:

I am getting a 500.19 error when I try to run the DNN install. See Below. I have tried to change permissions on the site but that doesnt change anything with the error, Any ideas? Module IIS Web Core Notification BeginRequest Handler Not yet determined Error Code 0x80070021 Config Error This configuration section cannot be used at this path. This happens when the section is locked at a parent level. Locking is either by default (overrideModeDefault="Deny"), or set explicitly by a location tag with overrideMode="Deny" or the legacy allowOverride="false". That was it. All I had to do was delete the default website that IIS installed and it work fine. Thanks for the quick reply. |

Lee I just installed Windows 7 Pro (64 bit) on a spare disk of my system and am trying to setup DNN 5.2.2.
When I followed the IIS 7.5 setup from your video I didn't have the "Classic.Net AppPool" at first. It only appeared later after messing with SQL Server Express. Any idea where does it really comes from?
I have had a world of grief with SQL Server Express. I just followed you video step by step. Two things were different:
1. I got a failure on the reporting services, which I didn't need so I backed them out.
2. I do success on the reset BUT when I went to the Mngt Studio I don't the "Database type filled in or the Database server name. This was the same problem I have seen with each install.
Any ideas???
This was a great video!!!

By the way, one of the reasons that I am doing the upgrade now is that PowerDNN upgraded their SQL servers to 2008 and when I download backups from them I can't install the database with SQL Server 2005. Yuk! So it was make either make the switch to Windows7 OR install a whole mess of required components to XP. /DaveS |

I'm not sure where "Classic.Net App Pool" came from. I did not make any special configurations before the video, the video is to a barebones windows 7 install so it should match up.
The one thing I did do before attempting to install anything was install updates for windows 7. After installing SQL Server I would also apply any updates.
Also, one thing to think about, I have Windows 7 (64bit) running on my main machine + then I have virtual PCs with XP, Vista and Windows 7 (32bit) - Installing DNN to a virtual PC makes it much easier if you need to start again for instance if SQL Server does not install correctly.
Thanks,

Any idea about the SQL Mngt Studio not being able to find the databases? In the services rhey "appear" to have been started. |

As "stupid" as this sounds this was sollved by typing in the name of the instance 'DSnow2\SqlExpress' to SQL Mngt Sdudio to make the connection. Why Lee's computer can find the default instance and mine can't I do not know.
Power DNN changed from SQL 2005 servers to SQL 2008 servers around 2/14/10. The effect of this on me was then when I tried to download and restore a copy of my site on my localhost I got obscure Transact SQL errors from SQL Mngt Studio during the restore. I also had to ungrade to SQL 2008, which has many prerequisites.
I thought that this was a good time to upgrade to Windows 7 Pro 64 bit which had all the prerequisites.
The Issue51 video was a great help! Since my database isn't stored inside of the DNN file-space and I require access vis SQL Mngt Express I had some additional steps.
The most interesting one was that I had to use SQL Mngt Studio to add 'IIS APPPOOL\Cl ic .NET AppPool' as a user and give it dq_owner rights. I guest that this is the ASPNET user from the IIS that shipped with XP.
Anyway I am running on the new configuration, so I can start my current localhost errors. Something is eating the 'Cl ic space .Net space AppPool a couple lines above.

I followed the first three video tutorials for enabling IIS and installing the SQL Server Express 2008 with Advanced Services and downloading DNN. After I created the folder for the DNN site, the 5.02.04 version, I attempted to install it from the web. I recived the error
HTTP Error 401.3 - Unauthorized
You do not have permission to view this directory or page because of the access control list (ACL) configuration or encryption settings for this resource on the Web server.
I double checked the permissions on the files, and they are exactly as suggested in the video. Do you have any suggestions for troubleshooting this? I am a complete beginner in working with this system. |

Do you see any part of the installation wizard, or does this happen immediately when you attempt to browse to the site?
It's obviously a web server configuration problem. What is the operating system and IIS version?
