Brief update: I have solved all my hosting issues and it took all of 10 minutes! 

How you ask? 

I moved my hosting to PowerDNN and dropped GoDaddy like a bad habit.  I currently support half a dozen or so sites independently that I have setup @ GoDaddy and I will be moving them all so I only have to support a single portal and multiple sites.

 Me thinks this is going to save me lots of time!

Thanks everyone for your input - and for those of you who continue to use GoDaddy for DNN hosting... you can always take pleasure remembering that you can burn upwards of 150 calories a day banging your head against the wall.

Can someone help? I'm trying to figure out DNN hosting through GoDaddy. It seemed straight forward at first and I figured GoDaddy had overcome some of their earlier issues. I set up a GoDaddy account, installed DNN, set up a portal...although I had to set it up under a subdomain...now that I've canceled my other hosting account with a different hosting provider and have our main domain transferred I cannot seem to get it pointing to my DNN installation.

I've had no success accessing our site when using our domain name an alias.....

We used the setup for adding it as a domain under our hosting account and have it pointing to our /dotnetnuke/portals directory...this is what allowed us to remove the subdomain name we used when initially setting up our portal...anyway...just a little frustrated at the moment.

I've read through all these posts on DNN Creative but am still not sure how to do this correctly. I'm sure it can't be that difficult...

I don't have any experience with GoDaddy and DotNetNuke.  It might not be "that difficult" but is does seem, based on the comments that I read, that it seems to be more difficult than some.

Can you access the site at all?  If so, using what URL?  Is this a DNS issue?

Is there any help available from GoDaddy?

I believe it may be a DNS issue but don't know where I'm going wrong. There domain controller is pretty straight forward but I'm doing something wrong.

I added our domain www.compassnorthgroup.com to our hosting manager and added the dotnetnuke directory to the path...this was actually pretty easy because it was just like browsing the server structure to make sure it pointed to the portals directory for the DNN installation.

I can access the site if I use the subdomain (www.cng.compassnorthgroup.info) I setup through the hosting controller but not our business domain. I really need to get it up soon..I thought it would be a simple process but it seems to be more difficult then I first imagined.

I have not talked with GoDaddy yet although I've gone through all their help files related to DNN with little progress. I was hoping to find someone who is really familar with DNN and GoDaddy first..

I've been going through the forums on both Dotnetnuke, here and various asp.net forums but most entries refrence GoDaddy/DNN from more then a year ago...

I will post any progress and/or solutions I come up with to help others.

Almost forgot...I can ping both my domains and that works fine...I just can't seem to get DNN to work with the domains...

Did you also put www.compassnorthgroup.com and compassnorthgroup.com in the portalalias table?

Do you mean in the DNN portal or in the domain manager on GoDaddy?

Portalalias is a table in your database.  If you can browse to the site and login as a host, you can take care of this in the Portal Aliases section at the bottom of the Site Settings page .

I have posted the same issue on dnn creative forum before and have had zero success with GoDaddy, who refused to provide any assistance.  I personally believe the disfunction of DNN to maintain child portals at GoDaddy is by design, thereby selling more cheap hosting.  The whole lack of support and control drove me away from GoDaddy to a better and more specialized host provider.  Making this change was worth the additional expense as it has minimized my administration time, backups, etc.. 

I highly recommend, based on my personal experiences that moving to a capable hosting provider is the best course of action.  If you are still bent on sticking it out and dealing with headache after headache at GoDaddy - then I have to mention a resource who claims to have 'methods' for overcoming all of the designed short comings of GoDaddy.  I and many others have had mixed success with these 'methods' (a.k.a. - creative hacks).

I will say - this guy is really cordial, very accomidating, and apparently resourceful - however, when working in a corporate environment as a SERVICE provider, I can not afford to hack my way through something I can't explain.  If it is my personal site or a free site for a friend or non-profit - maybe, but I still don't like having my name anywhere near it.

My other admonition - it has been my experience, that messing with Hack-a-Daddy takes a tremendous amount of time and try, try, again!  If you have an abudance of patience and time - knock yourself out!

Yes...thought that is what you were referring to. I did add both to the alias for the site....interestingly when I browsed to both I would get the DNN icon in the url but the content was GoDaddy's new site setup page.

Thanks for the advice...we may have to do that. I just left a DNN hosting plan we had for the past 3 years for financial reasons...GoDaddy seemed like a good option financially...and when I was able to set up the installation under the subdomain I was convinced it was a no brainer to move...although I did not think I would have this much trouble trying to get the new site to come up with our domain once it was moved.

Just an update....

Because I did not want to rebuild my site and/or go try to backup/restore my site & database on another provide I attempted to get everything working right...the closest I was able to come was to get the portal to resolve to mydomain.com/dotnetnuke ....try as I may I could not get it to resolve to mydomain.com ...I will be moving to another provider and have backedup my site/database...appreciate any insight on the best way to restore my site on a clean install with another provider. I know I'll have to make changes to the web.config (my backed up web.config)...beyound that I'm not sure.

These 2 methods should help you get the knowledge you need for moving to a new hosting provider. - Some hosting providers will actually set it up for you if you provide them with your dnn installation files and backup of your database. - Could be worth contacting support of a few hosting providers and see if they will set it up for you. - this can be an interesting exercise just to see how good their support is for the hosting provider as well,

Hi all,
Very very new to DNN so please be patient with me.....

I registered my domain name just today with GoDaddy and am using them to host my website also.

I would really like to get DNN 4.9.1 up and running on this.

From what I have been reading so far it seems pretty hard to do. I am looking for a newbie proof tutorial on how to set this up if someone has one or can point me to one that you do not have to subscribe too.

The video tutorials on here are simply fantastic and they have helped me get a much better understanding of what DNN is and what it can do.

I have not used GoDaddy as a host, but I have read of some troubles that people have with DotNetNuke installations.

But ... all is not lost.  Look here.
