Great! thank you for that.
I have bought an $8 account at IHostASP just to try it out, after all, if I cant get it to do what I want, in 1 month I can cancel it and only lost $8. However, I do really need the webspace that godaddy provides.
Now my worries are this:
1. As they are so cheap, I wonder if they have proper procedures in place for backup and restrictions for security etc? What I dont want is my website hosted on the same server as spam or XXX, as this means viruses!...
2. Since it is such a hassle to install, can it be upgraded easily too? What I really want is the ability to keep a backup of the site on my local computer at home, in case I need to move hosting providers.
3. Is it possible to host more than one DNN site at godaddy. I only want 3 at the most. 1 for a Christian music festival in the UK, 1 for a network of church websites and 1 for just testing and messing about. If godaddy only supports 2 then the test site can be dropped.
It seems like a good option and for only $7, I might as well give them a try. If after 1 month it doesnt work out, then I dont lose much!... I do appreciate your articles and have read them. This sort of stuff is really useful!
Thank you,
AndyB

@andyb1979 My articles should help you to achieve your goal. [edited]1) Cheap hosting does not provide good backup option. But you may want to buy a third party module (e.g Evotiva BackupScript - i am using currently and it has great features such as scheduled backups, this way i am able to run a copy of live environment at my localhost 2) Sorry, no. It won't be easy to upgrade with known steps. You should understand permissions, copy & move differences to handle upgrade process. I will cover all upgrades as long as i will alive 3) Yes, its very possible, im running mikroproje.com as main portal (/Portals/0 directory) running mynetnuke.com as second portal (parent portal - /Portals/27), and a sub portal autopatcher.mikroproje.com (/Portals/x) as Autopatcher mirror. I don't know but i should be able to create as many portals that DNN and webspace supports. |

Ajax is now supported at Godaddy.com on their Windows based hosting plans. I have created a tutorial which will walk you through the steps required to actually get DNN working on the root of a godaddy.com based Windows shared hosting account, http://spencerteck.com/WalkThroughs...ault.aspx. You can view this tutorial without signing up, but have to register if you want to post in the forums with any issues questions (register is free though, just required to be able to post to the forums). |

Arrghh!
Im still having trouble finding a decent web-host. Im currently with IHostASP.net but am finding them reliable but incredibly slow.
I am UK based (don't really care where the site is hosted), but I need 5GB space, 1 database (more would be nice but not essential), plenty of bandwidth (30-50GB / month). I have a budget of around £20 ($40) / month maximum and want to host podcasts.
Any ideas?
Cheers! |

I've been using SeekDotNet.com. I've been with them for a couple of years. They provide reasonable service. For the price, it's quite good. I also like the fact that I have access to both my database and my web directory.
You'll have to check with them for details and prices. |

Hi there and thanks for the info,
I like the bandwidth / disk space / cost, it looks good. I also really like the direct access to database. Makes backup/restore much easier.
Do you have a web address for a site on that host so I can get an impression of loading times? Also, do you know if they do automatic upgrades to the latest DNN version?
Thanks for your help,
AndyB |

You can take a look at patapscorg.com. The first page usually comes up in 5 or so seconds. After that, it's quite quick. I think that there are some shared hosting issues on my site that prevent the outside ping "keep alive" service from operating efficiently.
I'm using KeeperUp running on a computer in my house to the the keep alive pinging. |

The one thing I don't like about Godaddy is the MS SQL databases are 200MB. That will require a lot of attention to make sure the database doesn't get to big.

I am new to DotNetNuke and I am attempting to install the latest version on a GoDaddy hosted account.
I've read the forum posting about installing onto a GoDaddy account and found it helped a great deal however, I can't seem to get beyond the connection string to the database without something being wrong.
I've made so many changes at this point I don't know what is right anymore.
Below is my latest attempt at changing the web.config file and adding the connection string to my database but, I continue to get an error as follows:
Invalid value for key 'attachdbfilename'.
Below is the part of the web.config file that I have changed to include the connection string. I don't understand what is wrong with it...bigger still...I have no idea of where to go to find an answer.
<!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2005 Express - kept for backwards compatability - legacy modules --> <!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2000/2005 - kept for backwards compatability - legacy modules --> <!-- Host Header to remove from URL so "www.mydomain.com/johndoe/Default.aspx" is treated as "www.mydomain.com/Default.aspx" --> <!--optionally strip angle brackets on public login and registration screens--> <!--use as persistent cookie expiration. Value is in minutes, and only active if a non-zero figure--> <!-- set UsePortNumber to true to preserve the port number if you're using a port number other than 80 (the standard) --> Can anyone see what I have done wrong and give some type of guidance as to how I should set this so it will work?
thank you,
|

You probably included some tags in your posting of the web.config. If you make sure that there are spaces before and after any < or > then it should post ok. I would hope that the folks at godaddy could help with this. If not, maybe you could give Danica Patrick a phone call! But, if you'll try posting that again, we can probably help, too. |

Let me start by saying I've been a Godaddy hosting customer for several years and equally frustrated with the shortcomings and apparent unwillingness to assist paying customers. It's a remarkable business model ~which goes to show the resilience of the company you keep. Nevertheless, I have a great discovery that I felt compelled to share with regards to the Godaddy hosting sub-directory debacle. This also leads to an issue that I am sure several of you bright folks will be able to assist or point me to an existing article/tutorial Lee has published. The details of the following and the source of my information can be found at the following link: http://help.godaddy.com/topic/173/a...#adddomain I have implemented the contents of this Help Article and can attest to its success. The end result is to have 'myweb.com/dnn' point to a sub-folder '/dnn' without displaying it in the URL resulting in only 'mydomain.com' Word-to-the-wise: Changing your domain name takes up to 24 hours to complete and potentially longer to propagate name servers. (Again, the detailed steps are listed in the above link.) Step 1: Remove web access to the root directory of your hosting domain (myweb.com) Under the Domain Management settings, change the Primary Domain on Hosted Site to a non-real domain name: myweb-nonroot.com (for example) ***Take a 24 hour coffee break*** Step 2: Enter an alias for your new non-real domain name (myweb-nonroot.com) as the original domain name: myweb.com. Enter the Domain Hosting Path of the sub-folder /dnn. Once this change is effective you can navigate to myweb.com and it will resolve to the /dnn sub directory without presenting it in the URL. Yea - finally something I have tried and it appears to work great...with one minor issue. My original site was originally initiated with the /dnn extension and my default portal is registered in my DotNetNuke installation as myweb.com/dnn and I have registered a portal alias of myweb.com. Every link and menu still references the myweb.com/dnn path. Therefore, if you can guide me to how to change the default to myweb.com instead of myweb.com/dnn, I believe this is a workable solution. Thanks for the suggestion. I am actually referencing the default portal sub-directory that was used when the site was initialized, /dnn. Another example would be when selecting a page (on this site) in the links module. All of the site pages are qualified as ' http://myweb.com/dnn/forum/default.aspx', for example. Now that I have removed the .../dnn from my hosting URL reference, I would like to have dnn follow suit. |

For replacing text in Text/HTML modules, Engage Software's free F3 module can't be beat. It's prettymuch wysiwyg and you can accept/reject changes individually. |

Does anyone have any experience with hosting multiple domains on a single dnn portal @ Godaddy? I have never had success with multiple parent portals through Godaddy. I have attempted to utilize domain aliases and still nothing. Just curious if anyone has had success with this. Thanks, Dan |
