Hello - I am new to Webdesign but have had some success putting together a very simple skin (currently being worked on at www.manufactsure.co.uk) with three Panes:
 
      Content Pane at the top - generally left empty
Beneath this:
      Left Pane: Main content (see below)
      Right Pane: Image in a Text/HTML module

At the moment the Left hand pane has two text/html modules: the top one with the main text of each page and the one below with a page title as an image. I am manually aligning the modules to fit on the page.

I would prefer to redesign the skin to have the Right Pane alongside two panes on the left - the first aligned at the top of the page and the second aligned at the bottom - but I can't work out how to do it!

I appreciate that this is very simple but I don'treally know where to start and your help would be appreciated. . .

If you haven't done so already, I would recommend that you take a look at Pure CSS SEO Layouts for DotNetNuke skins.  There are other tutorials related to skins that you might want to view as well.

I hope that Lee will jump in with his answer, but I think that if you float the two panels to the left, then one will appear below the other.  The third panel can be left like the right panel in the demo skin.

As an after thought, I'm wondering why you need two panels on the left.  Why can't you just put multiple modules if a left panel?

The reason I wanted to have two panels was to enable me to align one to the bottom and have the second aligned to the top I've tried to do that with multiple modules but couldn't figure out how.

When you say in your first response that I should just float the two panels to the left - how do I do that?

Incidentally the skin is made with tables - does that mean that I would need to remake it in pure CSS?

Tables should be no problem.

Something like this, I'm assuming that you'll want fixed size panels, if you want to align to the bottom, might work (remember to replace the square brackets by angled brackets):
