Any idea why I may be getting this error when using the Site Wizard to build the curiously_green template?
I've extracted: curiously_green.template and curiously_green.template.resources to \Portals\_default.
Any help would be appreciated...

I believe that this could be due to an error in DotNetNuke. If you visit snapsis.com, John Mitchell has a solution for you. Look in the DotNetNuke Support forums.

Thank you, Joe.
I'd gotten my hands on an older version of John Mitchell's replacement portal.template.xsd. The link you gave led to a newer version he produced. It worked like a charm.

Hi, I'm new to DNN and am getting this error when I either try to create a new portal or use the site wizard when I select a template that I've exported using the same version of DNN. In site settings, it's telling me I'm on version 4.05.xx. I need to export the portal to migrate it to a different server but am reluctant to do this until I can successfully import it. The export seems to work fine and I get a success message telling me where it's created the new template. I have tried using the portal.template.xsd that comes with 4.9 out of despiration but no joy.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Some older versions of DotNetNuke had problems writing template files. Yours could be one of them. I would try upgrading your installation to the current version (4.9.4) and trying from there.
If you are saying that you can't export and reimport using 4.9.3, then something else is the problem.

The portal is under an old version, 4.05.x. I just tried using a 4.9 portal.template.xsd as I read that there could be an issue with the XSD in older versions.
Can I upgrade safely from 4.05.x to 4.9 without worrying about the existing portal? I ideally wanted to export the portal, import it to a dev machine, upgrade, then deploy the exported portal to the upgraded version.
Cheers

Yes. I recommend that you upgrade to 4.6.2. Then, you should be able to upgrade directly to 4.9.4. Take a look at:
How to Upgrade DotNetNuke (Auto Merge Method) (v4.6.2 to v5+)
How to Upgrade DotNetNuke (Manual Method) (all versions)
You will want to use the manual method to get to 4.6.2. Then you can use the Auto Merge method to do the upgrade to 4.9.4.
