Hello All,

I just finished the  first two videos from Issue no 22...really good work the videos really cleared up some issues I have been having.  But I can't get SQL Server Management Studio to restore the 2000 db. I am getting the following error:

System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: The operating system returned the error '5(Access is denied.)' while attempting 'RestoreContainer::ValidateTargetForCreation' on 'c:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\DNNFUMC2.mdf'. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.Smo)

Have I over looked something? Thanks for any help.

It would appear that you don't have the appropriate access to restore the database. You might want to review the tutorial again -- particularly the part where you create a login and password and also create access permissions for the new user.

Note that the error message says that you dont have access to the target, which is the SQL Server Express database.

Thanks for the response. I am really at a loss, the video says to restore the backup and then create the new logon user and password. Since I have not been able to restore the db I haven't been able to create the users.

Since I am the only one that seems to be having this problem, have I missed some steps along the way? I did follow your exact steps to install SQL Express (Lession 20). By the way in looking at the backup file from the Restore Backup page of SQL Server Management Studio the backup file user is "SQL319/administrator". This is the location of the database on my live site.

I would apprecitate any help.

Yes you are correct, you need to be able to restore the database before you can create any users. - I have not restored SQL 2000 into SQL 2005 express before so I will have to investigate this, thanks,

ok, just done a quick test, I too have the same problem.

I've tested this using an SQL 2000 database restore to SQL Server 2005 Express and
SQL 2000 database restore to SQL Server 2005

both have thrown errors, I've run out of time to look any further into it right now as I am currently transferring some databases round for clients, but my first step would be to Google 'transfer SQL2000 to SQL 2005'

I am actually currently doing this in my hosting providers control panel, but you don't see what is happening behind the scenes with SQL Server. - Does any one else have experience with this? Let us know how you get on, thanks,

Instead of spending hours and hours trying to resolve the problem...I had my ISP upgrade my database to SQL 2005. Backed it up and followed the excellent videos and now have my live site running on my local machine. Again, Lee the videos are great!

That's an excellent solution!

This might help:

Using SQL Configuration Manager I changed my Logon to 'Local System' and this worked a treat.

So take heart - it does work!!!!

My steps in detail.

1. open up SQL Server Configuration Manager (I am using SQL Server 2005)

2.right click on SQL Sever Express (I assume it is the same for the full version of SQL Server)

3.Choose Properties

4. in the Logon tab - click the built in account radio button and choose 'Local system' from the drop down.
