We have a few live sites running DNN, but we are by no means experts. As we look to bring more of our clients onto the DNN platform, the first thing we do is attempt to find your recommendation for the best/most stable release of DNN.

It would be excellent if you could keep a 'recommended' version status somewhere highly visible, it will make answering this question faster and more straightforward. Your excellent user community can then weigh in on their views, and you could also encourage module vendors to update their section regarding testing and compatibility.

I see this as a potentially huge issue as DNN moves to C# versions starting with V6.

I don't have any issues with 5.6.1. When 5.6.2 is released shortly, I expect that it's not going to exhibit any major issues.

Generally, I'll wait a week or so after a release to "take the temperature" of the community regarding the release. Then I'll think about upgrading. In lots of cases, I only upgrade sites once or twice a year, depending on what's happening. If there are major security issues, I'll upgrade faster than slower.

But, there's still a 4.9.1 site that isn't upgraded. There are some other issues regarding why that site isn't upgraded.

When 6.0.0 comes along, I'll probably go slowly, except for testing sites. Generally, setting up a test site, or making a test version of a live site and upgrading it is a good idea. That way, you will know if YOUR site is a problem child for that version. It's particularly a good idea when you are using third-party modules and you'll want to make sure that they all work or can be upgraded to work with the latest version of DotNetNuke.
