I have sql server 2005 installed on two different machines. On one of them under Databases/Databasename/Roles/Database Roles there are several ASPNET_ roles and on the other machine the ASP roles are not listed. How do I add ASPNet roles to Sql Server Express 2005? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
John

In SQL Server Management Studio
Go to the Security folder / logins
Right click on logins and select new login
For Login name click on the search box
Click on advanced
Click on find now
are from there you can select any ASP.NET roles that you require
That will make those logins available to any database, to then add them to a database:
expand a database node
expand the security folder / roles
You can then add a row into the database by right clicking on the roles folder
I think it will cover what you need, all I usually do is add a username for accessing the database using that method - in the past I have not needed to add ASP.NET roles - let us know if this helps, thanks,

Lee,
Thanks for your response. From the
folder / logins /add new login the only ASP option I have is ASPNET which I added to a new user. Then from the MyDatabase/Security/Users the only options I have for roles are db_accessadmin, db_owner, etc. I do not have any ASPNET_Membership, ASPNET_Profile or ASPNET_Roles options.
I had SQL express 2008 installed on this machine and removed it and added SQL Express 2005. This is a new install of SQL Express 2005. Did I forget to check something with the install?
Many thank,
John

Hello,
Why did you go from 2008 to 2005? 2008 should work fine with DNN. Something may have happened in the switch from one version to another.
I'm not sure what to suggest, I would be tempted to install SQL 2008 Express - but make sure you install the full version with advanced services. For info on this check out how I installed it with this tutorial:
How to install DotNetNuke to Windows 7
If you are working on a local computer, I would also suggest you use a Virtual PC, it makes it much easier for managing DNN configurations:
