I have followed the install instructions Install DNN 4.8 on Vista to install DNN 5.1.1 on Windows 7. A few detours were necessary, but everything worked well. Thank you very much.

I added some pages with different amounts of test as described in your tutorials. I Installed House of Nuke menu and was ready to install Andreas01. It was late, and I quit for the day.

The next day, I opened http://localhost/dnn_511" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://localhost/dnn_511 and got the "DotNetNuke Installation Wizard - Welcome" screen.

I tried to install and got an error.  

Connection Error(s):
Index #: 0
Source: .Net SqlClient Data Provider
Class: 14
Number: 15372
Message: Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed.

I deleted C:/DotNetNuke/DNN_511, recreated DNN_511 and copied the downloaded files into it. I went through the turorial again, but I don't remember making any changes to IIS or SQL Experss.

Again the install worked properly, and I rebuilt the site.

Again, I quit for the day, and again, I have the same problem. I opened http://localhost/dnn_511" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://localhost/dnn_511 and got the "DotNetNuke Installation Wizard - Welcome" screen.

I thought that the first time was a fluke, but now I need help.

Did you Installed House of Nuke menu on second installation?

If you let the install continue, what happens?

I think the issue you are experiencing here is separate to the house menu, however if you intend to use the house menu with DNN 5.x you need to read this forum post as it will not work correctly in DNN 5.x without making the changes outlined here:
DotNetNuke 5 and HouseMenu 1.4

A) I did install HoN the second time.

B) I tried it again later and it worked properly, then the next time I tried it, it failed. and has continued to fail.

C) When I tried to reinstall, I got the same error as before (see first post). Even if that worked, it would loose all of my work.

This may be a problem with Windows 7 (beta). There seems to be a problem "starting the process for the user instance". I have no idea what that tells me.

I may install DNN on my other system that uses Windows XP.


P.S. The changes to the URL in ControlSrc to: DesktopModules/housemenuskinobject/HouseMenuSkinObject.ascx are not needed in version 5.1.1. The correct url is the default.

Also, there in no host/skins option in 5.1.1. A different process is needed to install a skin.

If you are using Windows 7, you can use Windows virtual PC and install Windows XP for free within your Windows 7 installation, I currently have several virtual PCs running within my Windows 7 installation - as yet I have not tried installing DotNetNuke in a Windows 7 operating system.

To install a skin in 5.x you need to go to the extensions section

definitely check out Windows virtual PC integration with Windows 7 at it is really really good!

it works slightly differently in Windows 7, however this should give you a good idea of the benefits to using virtual PCs with DotNetNuke.
