I need to set up a Personal URL campaign for 100 people (i.e., Joe Smith gets a mailer telling him to to to www.website.com/JoeSmith or JoeSmith.website.com where there will be personalized content or rather generic content with his name inserted here and there.) I can do this with DNN if I set up user accounts for all the recipients and have them login, but can't figure out a way to do it without having users log in. Anyone have any experience to share?

You have to tie the Username or User's Name to the UserID. I'm not aware of an easy way to do this.
But, if you use Smart-Thinker's Smart Social modules, you can come close. You have to use the UserID in the URL. You might want to check at the Smart-Thinker website to see if anyone has tried to do something like you want.
Also, I haven't dug very deeply into ActiveModules' Active Social module. You might check with them, too.

Hi max2o,
I am very new in DNN development. I also got an assignment to set up a PURL campaign for a Marketing firm. It would be so nice of you if you could help me in this regard. At this stage my first question is that how can i implement the functionality where we can take the user to a personalized landing page after clicking on a purl like "JoeSmith.website.com"?
Thanks in advance for all of your support.

i think i didn't explain my question properly. i meant to say how we will handle pulrs in term of DNS. i.e if we have 10000 users then how 10000 different URLs can be managed?

You could use one of the available social networking modules to implement the personalized page. The user's "profile page" would become the personalized page.
You can use a URL Rewriter module such as Ifinity's URL Master to map the personalized URL to the profile page.
"All" that you would need to do is create the generic profile page, create the users, and create the URLs. I think that's a much more manageable task than creating individualized pages.
You should be able to create some automated tools to manage all of this. There are modules available that can be used to import user data. I would imagine that creating URLs for a rewriter wouldn't be too nasty of a task.

I had to abandon DNN for that project because the client did not want users to have to login. Good luck and please post your solution if you end up using DNN.

Yes...actually it is also not required to develop the application in DNN. general idea is like that...client has a basic details (first name, last name, email etc) for the recipients. An email will be sent to receptionists with an Purl in it. like username.comanyname.com. when user will click that link he/she will come to my application where for the first time i need to ask and fill out some questionnaire and for any next time i will show to user its personalized home page. My problem is that how i will manage Pulrs in term of DNS...i dont have any idea that if there are 1000 users who will come to my application with different URLs then how i manage that? once i can handle that then its easy to parse the URL and then got the user information from it . then based on that info i can pull out other user's details from DB to show personalized page.

I think that I misstated things. I don't believe that it is necessary to require a login. If you give someone a personalized URL (which includes their identifier), it will work just fine. You will need to set up the information inside of DotNetNuke so that the personal identifier points to that person's information.

I am fairly certain that you can rewrite a url of the form myname.company.com to company.com/ID/12345.default.aspx as will be required by DNN. I believe that you can also set up a generic redirect so that requests for myname.company.com get sent to the dotnetnuke installation. I'm not an expert at this, so you should inquire of someone who understands things like this.
