HouseMenu and DNN 5

I am trying to create a CSS skin. I downloaded HouseMenuSkin ObjectPA_01.04.01.beta and then installed it by going to Host > Module Definitions and then choosing Install Module. It says everything went well, but I do not see [Skin Objects] under Module definintons. I then uploaded my skin, but when I go to the page where I installed the skin I get the following error: Could Not Load Skin: /Portals/_default/Skins/GroceryTech3Pane/index.ascx, Error: The file '/DotNetNuke/HouseMenuSkinObject.ascx' does not exist. Does the HouseMenu not work with DNN 5? Thanks in advanced for your help.

You probably have the reference to the House menu wrong. You will want to look in your web directory to see where House menu is installed. Most likely, it is in a subdirectory of DesktopModules, so the path to the file might be something like: /DotNetNuke/DesktopModules/HouseMenu/HouseMenuSkinObject.ascx

It is located in the /DotNetNuke/DesktopModules/housemenuskinobject/HouseMenuSkinObject.ascx, does that mean that I have to copy it to the /DotNetNuke/HouseMenuSkinObject.ascx in order for it to work?

No. Correct the reference to the file. It will be in either the xml file or the ascx file.

I'm sorry. I was referring to the skin file. I assumed that, if you were referring to the House Menu, and you mentioned that you had installed it, that you had also modified your skin file to use the House Menu. If you haven't done so already, you should view How to install and configure the House of Nuke menu for a DotNetNuke skin If you are using the HTML approach to skinning, there should be a reference to the House Menu in your skin.xml file. If you are using the ascx approach, there should be a reference in the asxc file. For the HTML version, the HTML skin will be compiled into an ascx file when you do the install. I would suggest looking in there and looking for the reference to the House Menu. That should give you a clue as to how to fix the reference. You can always attach files here and let us have a look.

I did add the reference to the XML file. I have attached the skin.xml file, the index.htm file and my skin.css file. I am stumped. For now, I am playing with the skin and keeping the SolPart menu in, but I really want to use the HouseMenu. On another note, how do I style the links in the links module? I thought it was the .Normal A:link, .Normal A:visited, .Normal A:active and the .Normal A:hover. I played with those CSS styles to get the links to change, but I had no luck. Thanks for your helping out the new guy that is struggling.

I installed HouseMenuModulePA_01.04.01.beta on my test system, and loaded your skin. There is an extra < /object > tag at the bottom of the skin.xml file. Other than that, I was able to install the skin and apply it to a page.

Joe, I have the same problem that Greg Gotcher, Manager of Technology, Gooseberries Fresh Food Market has. My situation is slightly different. Here are the details. I downloaded HouseMenuSkin ObjectPA_01.03.01 and then installed it by going to Host > Module Definitions and then choosing Install Module. Gary, DotNetNuke Version 5 was released first in December. It looks to me as if the House of Nuke Menu and related things were last updated in July of 2007. So, it would not surprise me at all if the HoN Menu doesn't work with DotNetNuke 5. When in doubt, I would recommend that you check with the House of Nuke developer. He should know, or should be able to offer you advice. I would recommend that you take a look at the Snapsis CSS Nav Menu if you are looking for a newer menu system. It might also be that the newer DNN Nav Menu will work better for you. I'm sorry that you found the answers disappointing. But, the fact is that time passes. The good news is that time brings all sorts of updates and improvements. DotNetNuke 4.9.3 is certainly better than the 4.6 version I first started with a few years ago. DotNetNuke 5.x offers a number of improvements, and many new ways of doing things. As soon as DotNetNuke 5.x is stable, I expect that Lee will provide us with some new skinning tutorials that are aimed at exploring some of the newer DotNetNuke 5 features.

Just to add, if you are currently creating a skin for a live production website, I would recommend that you use version 4.9.3 as DNN5 is not currently stable enough for a production environment. I have not yet tested HouseMenu with DNN5, but from your feedback it looks as though the menu is not compatible with v5.

it works you have to modify the following file located in /portal/_default/skins/Lazy_Days/index.ascx and put the correct path pointing to HouseMenuSkinObject.ascx. Or simply upload the file to the root folder and it will start working.. Hope this helps. Error: The file '/HouseMenuSkinObject.ascx' does not exist
