DNN SEO Issues

Hi - I have a question related to DNN, duplicate content and SEO. My query relates to the issue that DNN seems to have some inherent problems when it comes to SEO - in particular, where there are three different versions of the home page: /, /home.aspx, /default.aspx. These could all effectively be spidered and leak page rank and could trip a duplicate content filter. Also when the sites are spidered it picks up hundreds of unknown links to logon modules etc - how can this be addressed?

Hello, If you create a Google site map this can get round some of the problems, if you use GSiteCrawler (free) you can remove all of the duplicate content before creating the site map, have a look at this interview: http://dnncreative.com/GoogleSitema...fault.aspx Here is a forum post for http://www.dnncreative.com/Forum/ta...fault.aspx">tips on using GSiteCrawler with DotNetNuke Privacy and Terms links also create duplicate content, you can get around this by creating a separate privacy and terms page and placing the links to those pages directly in the skin rather than using the tokens. Your will GOT better page rank by making better keywords for you DNN ascx pages, and yes there is a problem when any Search Engine Spiders, spidered then it picks up other DNN Modules links... but sometime these links helps for better interlinked Spider and it sometime will increase the PR ... its means how your webpages are interlinked with each other... and now a days we are working on DNN based SEO tutorials at our DNN Covered website Thanks

Thanks guys, the GSiteCrawler is especially useful, though it does highlight the weakness of DNN. Even with the use of a good sitemap, isn't there still an issue of page rank leaking to the login pages etc?

If you are still concerned with leaking page rank through login links then you can hardcode them into the skin as Tom mentions in his SEO quick start guide. - The only problem with this is that when you login it will always return you to the same page rather than the page you were previously on. - So you have to weigh up the pros and cons with that one. The SiteMap can get rid of all those duplicates, but I don't know if it still causes a problem with the search engines. I guess if dotnetnuke.com can achieve a PR8 then it may not be a big concern? - But, they are a big site with a lot of links and a smaller site may notice the difference.
